I’m house sitting this week in the West Valley. Because I’m rarely on this side if town, I decided to yelp a good coffee shop in the area. I’m working on reading books to check off # 11 on my Bucket List and wanted a place I could hang out and read. I came across Ground Control in Goodyear, AZ!
Ground Control is a little confusing and a little schitzo. They are a gelato shop/espresso shop/restaurant/beer specialist/wine bar. Yeah. So when you walk in, there’s a counter with gelato and coffee but then a big restaurant & bar behind. And like a small waiting room-ish area.
I had a lot of questions. If I ordered just coffee, did I have to sit in the waiting room? How do you order food? Why are people drinking beer at 10:50a am on a Saturday? I waked up to the counter and asked if they were still serving breakfast. They were- until 11! They told me to have a seat. It seemed like they were just getting the hang of things or something? The service was awkward and the staff seemed flustered even though there were about 5 people in the place. But it is freaking cute and I am way sympathetic towards small businesses.
The waitress recommended an espresso drink off of their “favorites” menu and they had biscuits and gravy on special.
If I’m being totally honest, the espresso was a little sweet and didn’t let the coffee shine through. I would order something different next time. The biscuits and gravy were pretty good, but I wonder if other things on their menu might be better. The pictures of food on yelp look really cute! Hah
They also do Open Mic nights, Wine Education nights, and have live music. I love that they seem really focused on community and being a place for people to meet.
Isn’t it so cute inside? When I was there, there were several groups of women chatting and catching up.
If you’re looking for a chill place to go on the weekends for entertainment or coffee, check out Ground Control! Don’t expect super smooth service and you should have a great time!
